Black is the easiest colour to lay a striking table on: white plates, copper, brass, coloured glass and candlelight all stand out against it, and it hides the odd splash of red wine until wash day. It suits a dinner party as much as a Christmas table, and the cotton drapes well rather than sitting stiffly.
